Based on the results of recent on-site inspections, the Winona Health Laboratory has again received accreditation by the Commission on Laboratory Accreditation of the College of American Pathologists (CAP).

Winona Health pathologist and laboratory medical director, Ronald England, DO, said, “The CAP accreditation program encompasses all aspects of the laboratory services we provide to our patients and the community, and achieving this accreditation recognizes the contributions of all staff toward providing high quality patient care.”

Laboratory administrative director, Brian Mackenzii, agreed, noting that, “Earning this accreditation requires the hard work and dedication of our entire team. Not only is this a great accomplishment for our laboratory given the amount of change and transition in recent years, but also for the quality of care to our local community.”

The accreditation program is designed to ensure the highest standard of care for patients.

During the onsite visit, inspectors examine the laboratory’s records, quality control procedures, qualifications of staff, laboratory equipment, safety program and record, as well as the overall management of the laboratory. The CAP Laboratory Accreditation Program, which began in the early 1960s, is recognized by the federal government as being equal to or more stringent than the government’s own inspection program.
