Anonymous donors established the Humanitarian Relief Fund as a permanently endowed fund with a gift of $50,000. The Fund provides financial assistance to individuals who wish to participate in humanitarian relief efforts that improve the health and well-being of people living in underserved and vulnerable communities around the world.
According to Betsy Midthun, Winona Health Vice President of Community Engagement, the donors’ hope that by providing financial assistance, a Winona Health employee who might not have the financial resources to engage in such volunteerism, will have the opportunity. They believe that individuals who volunteer in humanitarian efforts not only provide needed relief to the communities served, but that the experience will prove to be a life-changing experience that will enable them to bring back a wealth of knowledge and information to share with peers and colleagues.
The fund provides three grants awarded up to $350 each to individuals seeking to volunteer in humanitarian relief efforts who might otherwise be unable to participate due to financial constraints. To further encourage and support individuals to pursue such efforts, Winona Health will match each award from the Humanitarian Relief Fund for a total award up to $700.
The primary purpose of the trip must be in the delivery of humanitarian relief efforts to improve the health and well-being of underserved areas. Individuals employed by Winona Health or one of its subsidiaries may apply for a grant through the Humanitarian Relief Fund. Additional consideration may be given to immediate family members volunteering alongside an employee. Although there is no limit to household income of the applicant, the fund is intended for individuals who may not otherwise have the financial resources to participate in a humanitarian relief effort.
Interested individuals may complete an application by October 1 of the year preceding the intended trip. A committee of three to five Winona Health Community Engagement members and Winona Health employee(s) will review applications and determine award amounts. Grant recipients will be expected to share their experiences with Winona Health employees and/or the community in an open forum.
