Have you ever thought about how difficult it is for something to become a tradition? As you know, our world has many and for a new one to squeeze its way in, it has to be really special. This is particularly true for would-be holiday traditions because it gets really crowded this time of year.
Twenty-six years ago our community embraced a good idea that has established itself as a genuine holiday tradition. The idea was to raise funds for a good cause while simultaneously allowing donors to honor people who have been special in their lives. That idea has evolved and grown into what we today know as Winona Health’s Trees of Light Campaign.
Over the years, gifts from people like you have enabled Winona Health to provide services to thousands of people where costs would have otherwise been a barrier. In addition, tens of thousands of generous people have experienced the joy of helping others. When you make a gift in memory or in honor of someone special to you, it makes it even more satisfying.
My wife Sally and I have established our own tradition of making a gift each year in the names of our parents. I hope you’ll join us in establishing or continuing a similar tradition of your own. Please fill out the attached card and send in your gift today.

Fifteen Trees of Light will be displayed in the Winona Clinic lobby and will remain lit through the beginning of January. For each donation, a corresponding colored ornament will be placed on one of the trees in the Winona Clinic lobby with a tag for each honoree (only the honoree’s name will be placed on the ornament – the donor’s name will not be listed). For example, if you give a $10 donation in memory of a loved one, a red ornament will be placed on a tree. If you give $50 in memory of five people, there will be five red ornaments, each tagged with an honoree’s name. All donors and their honorees will be recognized in the Winona Post.
You are invited to celebrate all of the names on the trees.
Wednesday, December 18, 5 p.m.
Winona Clinic lobby,
855 Mankato Avenue, Winona
Refreshments and entertainment will be provided. If you wish to take the ornament tagged with your honoree’s name, you may do so between December 18, 2013, and January 10, 2014.
