Diabetes Education Services

Diabetes education services are provided at Winona Health, Winona Family Medicine and Rushford Clinic. This comprehensive education program is certified by the American Association of Diabetes Educators (AADE). Our staff includes one registered dietitian that is a Certified Diabetes Educator and a certified diabetic registered nurse.

Diabetes education is regularly prescribed by the primary provider for both newly diagnosed diabetes and established diabetics who may be struggling to maintain or are desiring to target a specific goal within their diabetic regimen. Diabetes education is a collaborative process through which people with or at risk for diabetes gain the knowledge and skills needed to modify behavior and successfully manage the disease and its related conditions.

Winona Health’s Diabetes Education Program has been recognized as a quality diabetes self-management education program since 2002 by the American Diabetes Association.

The educational program covers many aspects of diabetes such as: diabetic testing, glucometers and usage, medication monitoring, food and exercise programs, insulin pump training, and continuous glucose monitoring system training.

This service is available at the Winona Health Campus and Rushford clinic.

Trends show diabetes education is moving out of the hospital and into the community. In addition to providing individualized diabetes and nutrition education at the Winona Health campus, this department provides outreach education within the greater Winona community.

Outreach activities include:

  • Nutrition education and diabetes screening at local health fairs and trade shows
  • Wellness events
  • Diabetes prevention classes (fall, winter and spring)
  • Educational programs
  • Service groups/professional organizations

The largest community event is the Diabetes Expo hosted every other year by Winona Health and Winona Area Lions’ Clubs. The next Diabetes Expo is Saturday, October 27th from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Winona Health campus and will offer glucose screenings and blood pressure screenings, educational programs on diabetes related topics, and vendors of diabetes supplies and medications.
