Diabetes is a chronic condition that affects the way your body metabolizes sugar (glucose), the body’s main source of energy. Insulin is a hormone secreted by the pancreas that turns body sugar into energy.

There are four main types of diabetes:

There are nearly 24 million Americans with diabetes in the United States. Every year, 1.3 million peope are diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes. The rapid increase in new cases of Type 2 Diabetes in persons 30 to 39 years of age, in children and adolescents is of special concern. This epidemic of Type 2 Diabetes is global and closely reflects the epidemic of overweight, obesity and metabolic syndrome, and sedentary lifestyle.
