Winona Health earns top performer status in Centers for Medicare & Medicaid quality program

Winona Health has been named a top performer in caring for patients with heart failure and pneumonia by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Premier healthcare alliance project.

The Top Performer Awards reflect that Winona Health achieved a composite quality score in the top 20 percent of all participating hospitals. In addition, Winona Health achieved an Attainment Award for caring for heart attack patients, indicating that it meets or exceeds the median quality benchmark score.

“Patient care successes are a testament to our staff’s commitment to providing exceptional care 100% of the time,” noted Kathleen Lanik, Winona Health’s chief quality and safety officer. “Our healthcare providers and staff continuously review and improve our processes to ensure we provide the best care to our patients.”

Charles Shepard, MD, chief, Inpatient Services, said, “Medicine and medical care is continually improving as organizations share data and use evidence-based best practices. WH has dedicated providers and staff who embrace a team approach when caring for our patients and residents; as a result, our outcomes continue to improve.”

About 250 hospitals participate in this voluntary CMS project, which measures hospital processes and outcomes against evidence-based practice standards. Hospitals are ranked in each clinical area based on their Composite Quality Scores, an aggregate of quality measures within each clinical area.

“All staff have done a phenomenal job of taking each and every parameter to heart, understanding the importance of every step and making it a part of their standard work,” said Robin Hoeg, RN, Winona Health’s inpatient services administrator.

Additional research by Premier using the Hospital Compare dataset showed that, by March of 2008, hospitals participating in this voluntary program scored on average 6.9 percentage points higher (94.64 percent to 87.36 percent) than non-participants when evaluating 19 common Hospital Compare measures.
