Winona Health Auxiliary recognized as Outstanding Philanthropic Organization

The Winona Health Auxiliary was chosen to receive the 2010 Outstanding Philanthropic Organization – non-profit by the Upper Mississippi Valley Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals. The award was presented at the association’s National Philanthropy Day Awards Luncheon Friday, November 12 in La Crosse.

“Above and beyond the funds that are raised and awarded, the members of the Auxiliary provide volunteer service throughout the Winona Health organization,” said Peter Grabow, a past president of the Association of Fundraising Professional’s chapter who presented the award. “The fruits of their labor are gifts back to Winona Health.”

Accepting the award, Winona Health Auxiliary president, Julieanne Schwemer, said “We wish to express our sincere appreciation for this award. We are a grass-roots organization who works so smoothly together walking hand-in-hand to enrich the lives of our patients and residents at Winona Health. It is the power of the purpose that spurs us on.”

The Winona Health Auxiliary began in 1894 with a small group of community-minded citizens. Today, the Auxiliary has more than 400 members—women and men, engaged in an impressive array of fundraising activities in support of Winona Health. The Auxiliary has contributed nearly $1.4 million to Winona Health in the past 30 years, and since 1962, they have awarded more than $450,000 in scholarships.

Volunteer Services manager, Autumn Herber, CAVS, coordinates the volunteers’ activities at Winona Health and serves as a liaison between the Auxiliary and Winona Health as volunteers serve in various capacities throughout the organization—from the mail room to the surgery lounge to information desks to providing free informational programs about Healthcare Directives. “We are fortunate to have so many dedicated volunteers who have a variety of talents and knowledge,” said Herber. “It is truly a pleasure to work with them.”

In addition to their on-site activities, the Auxiliary also plans and hosts several fundraising events throughout the year including the Victorian Tea, Used Book Sale, Holiday Happiness, Fantasy of Trees and the Birthday Ball. Auxiliary volunteers also manage the Glady D. Miller Gift Shop, open to the community year-round in the hospital lobby.
