Carol Powell, MD, joins Winona Health Behavioral Health team

Board-certified psychiatrist, Carol Powell, MD

Board-certified psychiatrist Carol Powell, MD, has joined the Winona Health Behavioral Health staff.

Dr. Powell will provide outpatient mental health services including medication management and follow-up care for adults through Winona Health Psychiatric & Counseling Services beginning October 20, 2011. Dr. Powell’s areas of expertise are in the treatment of depression, anxiety, bi-polar disorder, schizophrenia, and schizo-affective disorder. Dr. Powell also will provide treatment to those struggling with eating disorders who are actively involved in treatment with a therapist or other professional eating disorder issues support system.

“Dr. Powell brings extensive experience and education to effectively care for adult patients through our outpatient counseling services,” noted John Rislove, Winona Health’s director of Behavioral Health Services.

Dr. Powell is board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry. She received her medical degree from the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska. She completed her residency in the Department of Psychiatry at Mayo Clinic in Rochester. Dr. Powell also completed a fellowship in Sleep Medicine at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. She is a member of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.

Winona Health offers Free Depression Screening Thursday, October 6, 2011

Winona Health Psychiatric & Counseling Services is offering free, confidential depression screenings on Thursday, October 6, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in suite 200 of the Parkview Office Building on the Winona Health campus in Winona.

“One out of every five adults may experience depression at some point in their lives,” said Betsy Rowekamp, Winona Health certified psychiatric registered nurse. “We want people to know that help is available and that they can feel better.”

Common symptoms of depression include any of the following:
• A persistent feeling of sadness
• Loss of pleasure in usually enjoyable activities
• Feeling of hopelessness, helplessness and worthlessness
• Changes in sleep patterns and appetite
• Loss of energy
• Restlessness
• Thoughts of death or suicide

Jeannette Groschel, NP, joins Winona Health medical team

Jeannette Grochel, NP, Nurse Practitioner Hospitalist

Jeannette Groschel, NP, has joined the Winona Health staff and will serve as a nurse practitioner hospitalist.

Hospitalists specialize in caring for patients while they are hospitalized, providing around-the-clock care and working closely with nursing staff and each patient’s primary physician.

“At Winona Health, hospitalists work with care coordination teams made up of nurses, dietitians, pharmacists, respiratory and physical therapists, social workers and other specialty care staff,” said Robin Hoeg, Senior Leader, Inpatient Services. “Jeannette is a welcome addition to our team.”

“I was drawn to Winona Health because the staff is welcoming and devoted to their patients,” said Groschel. “I’m looking forward to using my extensive experience as an ICU nurse along with my nurse practitioner certification in this new role.”

Groschel received her master of science in Nursing degree at the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth, Minn., and her bachelor of science degree in Nursing from Bethel University in St. Paul, Minn.

Sandhya Behera, MD, joins Winona Health Family Practice Department

Sandyha Behera, MD, provides care for people of all ages in the Family Practice Department.

Board certified Family Practice physician, Sandhya Behera, MD, has joined Winona Health and provides care for patients of all ages in the Family Practice Department at Winona Clinic.

Dr. Behera received her Doctor of Medicine degree at Veer Surendra Sai Medical College in India and completed her residency in Family Medicine at University of North Dakota in Minot and Fargo, North Dakota. She is a member of the American Association of Family Physicians and the American Medical Association. In addition to English, she is fluent in Hindi and Oriya.

“We are pleased to welcome Dr. Behera to Winona Health,” said Marti Bollman, administrative leader for Primary Care Clinics. “She is a wonderful addition to our healthcare team.”

Dr. Behera will provide care to children and adults and has a special interest in women’s healthcare.
