Board-certified diagnostic radiologist, Alex Westenfield, MD, joined the Winona Health medical staff on August 28, 2017.

“I chose Winona Health because I wanted to come back to the area I grew up in—I’m coming back to my roots,” said Dr. Westenfield. “I like the scenery and peacefulness of this area and being able to work in a community and an organization this size. I also like that Winona Health is an independent organization that values contributions from everybody involved.”

Dr. Westenfield is originally from the Spring Valley/Preston, Minn. area, where his father was a teacher. As a sophomore in college majoring in chemistry, he observed doctors in action taking care of a family member and decided to go into medicine. “What I enjoy about Radiology is being able to figure out a diagnosis through pictures and performing minimally invasive procedures that help our patients,” said Dr. Westenfield. “It’s not all sitting in a dark room looking at images as some people may think; there is a fair amount of patient contact, which I also enjoy.”

Dr. Westenfield is certified by the American Board of Radiology. He earned his medical degree from the University of Iowa College of Medicine in Iowa City, Iowa, completed his Transitional Year Residency at Gundersen Health System in La Crosse, Wis., and his Diagnostic Radiology Residency at the University of Nebraska in Omaha, Neb. He also completed fellowships in cancer and cardiac imaging and is MQSA (Mammography Quality Standards Act) Certified for Breast Tomosynthesis and Digital Mammography.

Dr. Westenfield is a member of the American College of Radiology, the Minnesota Medical Association, the Minnesota Radiological Society and the American Roentgen Ray Society, which is the first and oldest radiology society in the United States. In his free time, he enjoys golfing, live sporting events, the Minneapolis dinner theater scene and all kinds of musical performances.

Dr. Westenfield joins Diagnostic Radiologist George Ripeckyj, MD, in the Winona Health Radiology department. Winona Health has been designated a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology. To schedule a mammogram, call 507.457.4320.
