Lisa “Longball” Vlooswyk greets golfers with tips to better their swing.

Winona Health is celebrating 125 years of providing community-focused healthcare, and the Winona Health Foundation’s 2019 Ben & Adith Miller Classic raised a record $230,000 for the Ben & Adith Miller Patient Care Fund, a charitable fund for individuals and families who receive healthcare services at Winona Health.

These are just a few of the messages those who benefit from the Patient Care Fund have shared:

“Thank you so much for your kindness and generosity! You have eased one of my burdens during this trying time in my life. With sincere appreciation…”

“Life saver! Was totally stressed on these bills—didn’t know how to pay. Thank you for your loving care and concern.”

“Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! You have blessed me and my family and we are so grateful. This was a huge lift off our shoulders. After reading the letter, I was very inspired and blessed to see what you are doing. I hope one day I can contribute to this fund. This will never be forgotten.”

“Our community is fortunate to have the Ben & Adith Miller Patient Care Fund to help those in need with their medical expenses,” said Rebecca Lamberty, chief administrative officer, at Winona Health. “We’re grateful that so many golfers and volunteers participate in this event and for the generous support of Hugh and Vera Miller, RTP Company and the loyal sponsors who make this event so special.”

The Golf Classic was Monday, August 5 at Cedar Valley Golf Course and included an 18-hole tournament and a 9-hole scramble. Professional golfer and entertainer Lisa “Longball” Vlooswyk gave a demonstration and mingled with participants throughout the day. More than 30 Winona Health Volunteers were on hand to help ensure participants enjoyed the event, which was supported by more than 60 regional and international companies.

The Ben & Adith Miller Patient Care Fund was established in 1986 by Benjamin A. Miller, a former Winona-area businessman and philanthropist, in honor of his wife, Adith, to help local individuals and families in need pay for medical care at Winona Health. The annual Golf Classic began in 1990 as a fundraiser to help ensure ongoing funding for this unique community resource. In fiscal year 2018, the fund helped 803 people with more than $971,672 in financial assistance.

The next Ben & Adith Miller Classic will be Monday, August 10, 2020.
