Construction officially began Monday, April 11 on the 3/4-mile stretch of Hwy. 43/Mankato Avenue between Sugar Loaf View and Belleview Street in Winona. The Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) is reconstructing this road to improve safety and reduce congestion. Construction will be complete in early November.

Traffic impacts
During construction, the number of travel lanes on Hwy. 43 and Hwy. 61 will be reduced and three major cross streets (Bruski Dr., Frontenac Dr. and Riverbend Rd.) will be closed one at a time. The first stage of construction includes work adjacent to Hwy. 61 with the closure of one lane in each direction on the west side of Hwy 43. Work will also take place along Hwy. 61 to prepare for temporary roads that will assist traffic at Hwy. 43 and Hwy. 61. This work will be ongoing in April.

Construction meetings and updates
Beginning this week on April 14, the public is welcome to attend weekly construction meetings every Thursday at 11 a.m. at Perkins Restaurant, 956 1/2 Mankato Ave., Winona. The project manager and access manager will be available to answer questions about access to local businesses and other impacts to travelers and residents.

Construction updates will also be sent via email each week (typically on Friday mornings) to share what you can expect for the weekend and week ahead. To receive weekly updates during construction season, please sign up up for email or text alerts from MnDOT.
