Arnold W. Fenske Research Internship

Since 2016, Winona Health offers a formal, paid summer internship program for one carefully selected student. The student will spend eight weeks at Winona Health performing two separate research projects for our ACS-accredited Cancer Committee. In addition, the summer intern will spend time with the Winona Health general surgeons, plastic surgeons, maxillofacial surgeons, radiologists, nutritionists, oncology social workers and oncology nurse coordinator. The intern will gain knowledge in all aspects of cancer care, from diagnosis through treatment. The program will culminate in an oral presentation to the Cancer Committee.

This program is open to Winona State University or Saint Mary’s University pre-professional medical students only. A minimum GPA of 3.5 is required. For more details, click to expand the Arnold W. Fenske Internship Overview below:

Arnold W. Fenske Internship Overview

  1. The student must be enrolled full time at either Winona State University or Saint Mary’s University.
  2. The student must have declared a major in a science field.
  3. The student must have a minimum 3.5 GPA
  4. The student must have completed at least 30 credits.
  5. The student must be planning to apply to medical school (M.D. or D.O.).
  1. Applications must be completed and submitted by January 22, 2018.
  2. The decision will be announced by the Research Committee by February 14, 2018. The selected candidate will then have one week (7 days) to accept or decline the position.
  3. Required application materials include the following:
    1. Completed application form (click here to download); you can also apply online.
    2. Personal statement.
    3. Copy of college transcripts (unofficial transcripts will suffice).
    4. One letter of recommendation, preferably from a professor at the university currently enrolled.
  1. The student will begin the program 1-2 weeks after coursework ends for their spring semester, (i.e. late May/early June). The program will run for 6-8 weeks.
  2. The student will complete all Winona Health in-processing and credentialing requirements prior to beginning the program. This can be accomplished well in advance.
  3. The student will perform at least two studies under the guidance of the ACS-Certified Winona Health Cancer Committee. Additional projects may be assigned per the discretion of the Cancer Committee or Research Committee. This will involve manuscript drafting and/or presentations.
  4. The student will also take part in clinical activities as scheduled by the Cancer Committee, Research Committee or mentoring physician, such as (e.g. shadowing physicians, nurses or social workers; observing surgical procedures).
  5. The student will attend all Cancer Committee meetings or other meetings as assigned.
  6. The student will be required to present study data at Cancer Committee meetings, or possibly at local or regional scientific meetings, as directed by the Research Committee. The student must be available for these presentations even if it falls outside the dates of the formal internship.
  1. The student will be paid $2,800 for the 6-8 week program.
  2. The student will be willing to participate in any advertising or recruitment efforts put forth by Winona Health within the context of research.
  3. If the student will request college course credit for the internship, it will require that the student coordinate independently with his/her university. The Research Committee will provide any requested information therein.
