As I have heard the story, back in 1986 some community leaders, including Ben Miller, were socializing and the topic of medical needs, patient debt and charity care costs at the hospital came up. The comment was made, \u201cBen, you should do something about this.\u201d He agreed. Ben then pulled together these and other community leaders to establish a fund that even he may not have realized would be so vital to Winona Health and our community years into the future. The stated purpose of the fund was to \u201chelp make sure our grandchildren\u2019s children and their children will be able to receive the same level of quality health care at CMH [Community Memorial Hospital, now Winona Health] that we enjoy today. And it will insure that our hospital will continue to care for the urgent medical needs of our friends and neighbors, regardless of their ability to pay.\u201d<\/em> The following are statements from the original Case for Support<\/em> for this fund.
