I worked in Family Medicine for 21 years before I found my true calling as a hospice physician in 2014. Helping people take control of how to LIVE to the fullest during the last year of their lives with the support of our dedicated hospice nurses and social workers is unbelievably rewarding work. Everything we do helps to relieve stress for patients and their families, and keeps patients at home (or in their assisted living residence or nursing home) rather than bouncing in and out of the hospital. Hospice care is not just for cancer patients, and it’s not just for the last few days or weeks of life, but for the last 6 months or more. Medicare, Medicaid, and many insurance policies completely pay for the hospice benefit. Families can request an informational visit from a hospice worker at any time, at no cost, and with no obligation. We feel sad when we hear way too many people say, “We wish we’d known about hospice much sooner.”
