Jessica Nelson, CNP (certified nurse practitioner), has joined the Winona Health Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine team.

Nelson, a Rollingstone native, has been a registered nurse at Winona Health since 2006. “I decided to take the next step and go back to school so I’d be able to care for people in my community on a different level,” she said. “Becoming a nurse practitioner has been a long-term goal.”

Nelson earned her Master of Science – Family Nurse Practitioner degree from Walden University, Baltimore, Maryland, and is certified by the American Association of Nurse Practitioners. Prior to becoming certificated as a Family Nurse Practitioner, she cared for patients as a registered nurse in the Family Birth Center for nearly 10 years and then for patients in the Dialysis department.

“After earning my certification, I chose to stay with Winona Health because I like being a part of this community and having the chance to develop relationships with people I’m caring for. We have a wonderful team of healthcare providers and a broad range of services for our patients.”

Nelson and her husband have four children and live in Rollingstone. In her free time, she enjoys spending family time on the river or just being outdoors fishing, hunting or hiking. In addition, Nelson volunteers as the director of the Rollingstone First Responders and president of the Rollingstone chapter of the Jaycees.

Autumn Leigh Cole, CNP (certified nurse practitioner), joined the Winona Health Pediatrics team.

“Working with Kids and their families has always been a passion of mine,” said Cole. “I started my nursing career in Pediatrics and knew that my dream job would be working with kids as a nurse practitioner.”

Cole said she’s looking forward to, “meeting kids and their families. There is something that is so wonderful about working with families to ensure that their kids are growing up healthy and safe. Being around kids, listening to their questions (about everything) and helping them understand how to take care of their minds and bodies makes me love what I do!”

Prior to joining the Pediatric & Adolescent Medicine team, Cole cared for hospitalized patients at Winona Health. She joined the organization in November 2014. She said, “I love it here, the people, the patients, the staff that I work with on a daily basis—they all make me look forward to coming to work. It’s a fantastic place to have a career!”

Cole said she originally chose Winona Health because, “it is such a forward-moving organization; I wanted to be a part of that. I’ve been at other organizations and there is a much different feeling at Winona Health. From the moment you walk in, there is an energy and people seem happy to be here.”

Cole is certified by the American Association of Nurse Practitioners. She earned her Master of Science in Nursing-Family Nurse Practitioner from the University of Wisconsin- Eau Claire and her Bachelor of Science in nursing from Winona State University in Winona, Minn. Cole’s experience includes a decade of healthcare experience including caring for pediatric patients in an Intensive Care setting, and providing hospital and palliative care to patients of all ages.

Laura Stussy, CNP, has joined the Winona Health staff and is caring for patients of all ages at Urgent Care, 420 E. Sarnia Street in Winona, Minn.

Prior to becoming a certified nurse practitioner, Stussy served as a registered nurse for several years in the Emergency Departments of Winona Health and Mayo Clinic Health System in La Crosse, Wisc. She began her nursing career on the Medical/Surgical/Pediatric unit at Winona Health and will return as a Nurse Practitioner at Urgent Care after most recently caring for patients in the La Crosse area.

“I’m excited about the opportunity to come back to Winona Health,” says Laura. “I’ve always enjoyed caring for patients and their immediate needs in the Emergency/Urgent Care setting. The teamwork, collaboration, and focus on providing excellent patient care at Winona Health is very impressive and definitely something to be proud of.”

Stussy (pronounced STEW-See) earned her Master of Nursing – Family Nurse Practitioner degree from Viterbo University School of Nursing in La Crosse, Wis. She is certified by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners and a member of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners.

In her free time, Laura enjoys outdoor activities such as camping, hiking and biking with her family. She and her husband live in Winona and have three young sons.

Laura Chesher, CNP, joined the Winona Health staff and sees patients of all ages in in the Urgent Care clinic at 420 E. Sarnia Street in Winona, Minn.

“I like interacting with people and the problem-solving aspect of being a nurse practitioner. The best part of my work is interacting with patients and figuring out how to help them start feeling better.”

Asked why she chose Winona Health, Chesher said, “It was important to me that Winona Health is an independent organization, because it’s easier for an organization to make decisions that benefit a particular community when it is community based. When I interviewed, I sensed a lot of pride in taking care of the community.”

 

Chesher is certified by the American Association of Nurse Practitioners. She earned her Master of Science in Nursing and her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Graceland University in Independence, Mo. She is a member of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners.

 

In her free time, Chesher plays trumpet in the La Crosse Symphony Orchestra, and enjoys cycling, cooking and spending time with her family. She and her husband have three children.

Hospitalist staff focus solely on caring for patients while they are hospitalized. They work closely with each patient’s primary physician along with care coordination teams including nurses, dietitians, pharmacists, respiratory and physical therapists, social workers and other specialty care staff.

Erin Hanson, CNP, Urgent Care

Hanson_small_CMYKErin Hanson recently earned certification as a family nurse practitioner (CNP) and will transfer from the Intensive Care Unit at Winona Health to Urgent Care at 420 E. Sarnia Street in Winona.

Hanson’s professional experience includes caring for cardiothoracic surgery and transplant patients at University of Madison Hospital and Clinics, followed by seven years caring for patients in Winona Health’s Intensive Care Unit.

“Before joining Winona Health, I worked in a large tertiary hospital. When my husband and I moved back to this area from Madison, I also checked out Rochester and La Crosse,” said Hanson. “I chose Winona Health because of the interpersonal relationships and how that benefits patients. It’s a very supportive community and there are good resources available for people in this area.”

In addition to certification as a nurse practitioner, Hanson also has a doctorate of nursing practice from the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities, and a bachelor of science in nursing from Winona State University. She is a member of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners.

Katie Halder, CNP, to join Rushford Clinic

Katie Halder, CNP, joined the Winona Health Family Practice team and will see patients full-time at Rushford Clinic, 109 W. Jessie Street in Rushford, Minn. Katie will see patients as part of a care team with Nicholas Modjeski, MD.

“We are excited to introduce Katie to the Rushford community,” said Marti Bollman, administrator for Winona Health Primary Care Clinics. “We’ve been looking for the right healthcare provider for Rushford for a long time, and I believe community members will receive wonderful care and enjoy working with Katie.”

Halder and her family decided to move from their home in Parkers Prairie, Minn., to join Winona Health and the Rushford community. “My husband and I wanted to move our young family back to southeastern Minnesota to be closer to family. We were excited to find an opportunity with Winona Health in Rushford. We both grew up in a small town and I have practiced in a small town and find it extremely rewarding.”

Prior to joining Winona Health, Halder cared for patients at Sanford Health in Alexandria and Parkers Prairie, Minn. She is experienced in providing all aspects of primary care from well-child checks to helping patients manage chronic health conditions. She also has experience addressing mental health concerns.

Halder is certified as a Nurse Practitioner by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners.  She received her Master of Science-Family Nurse Practitioner degree from the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis.
