Catherine Compton, CNP, transfers to Plastic, Cosmetic & Reconstructive Surgery department

Compton rgbCatherine Compton, a certified nurse practitioner (CNP), who has been caring for patients at Winona Health’s Urgent Care clinic since 2012, has transferred to Winona Health’s Plastic, Cosmetic & Reconstructive Surgery department and works with plastic, reconstructive and hand surgeon, Hans Serleth, MD.

Compton chose Winona Health back in 2012 because, “This is a great community, and I like Winona Health because everyone works together. It’s not a hierarchy–there’s teamwork.”

“I am excited about this opportunity to help offer services previously not here,” said Compton. “I love the diversity of the specialty. For example, I’m working with patients who have had breast reconstruction after mastectomy due to breast cancer; who may need assistance with returning to work after a hand injury; or who are having cosmetic procedures like tummy tucks, eye lifts or laser treatments.”

Compton has more than 15 years of healthcare experience including providing urgent care and primary care services for families in several communities including Winona, Onalaska, Beaver Dam and Milwaukee Wis. She earned a Master of Nursing degree at Viterbo University in La Crosse, Wis. and graduated Suma Cum Laude.

In her free time, Compton enjoys participating in various run/walk opportunities in the area that raise money and awareness for various health issues in the community. She and her husband live in the Winona area and have two school-aged children.

New medical services available in Winona:
Plastic, reconstructive and hand surgeon, Hans J. Serleth, MD, joins Winona Health

Serleth_small_RGBPlastic, reconstructive and hand surgeon, Hans J. Serleth, MD, (pronounced Ser-LETH) has joined the Winona Health medical staff, bringing a new area of specialty care to the region.

“Dr. Serleth is an experienced, highly skilled plastic, reconstructive and hand surgeon whose expertise also includes general surgery,” said Sara Gabrick, administrator of Surgical and Specialty Care Services at Winona Health. “He brings a whole new scope of services to our area and he’ll also be able to increase access to general surgery procedures needed in Winona.”

Gabrick also noted that because of Dr. Serleth’s expertise, Winona Health’s cancer program, which is accredited by the national Commission on Cancer, now also includes breast reconstruction surgery.

Dr. Serleth is familiar with Winona because he attended Winona Senior High School when he was a sophomore, and he still has connections to the area. He said, “My best friend lives here, and I come every year to trout fish with him. He asked me if I ever thought of moving here. I decided to check out Winona Health, and liked what I found.”

Dr. Serleth said he chose Winona Health because, “I like that Winona Health is a community-owned, fiercely independent system that hasn’t been swallowed by the corporations. I like that decisions can be made on a smaller scale and on the level where they’ll be implemented—that’s better for patients and the community.”

Dr. Serleth has been a surgeon for more than 15 years. He received his Medical Degree from the University of Minnesota Medical School in Minneapolis, and completed his Internship and residency in General Surgery at Gundersen Health System in La Crosse, Wisc. Following that, he completed a one-year fellowship in gastrointestinal surgery in England with the Royal College of Surgeons. He then practiced for approximately 10 years before returning to the University of Minnesota for a three-year fellowship in Plastic Surgery.

Dr. Serleth and his wife have four school-aged children. In his free time he enjoys hunting, fishing and other outdoor sports such as rock and ice climbing.
