The Winona Area Quilters Guild has been making and gifting quilts to Winona Health since 1988. They recently delivered 25 quilts for the Winona area’s newest little residents in the Family Birth Center. “Our usual meetings have of course been disrupted. We’ve had a couple of meetings over Zoom and, during these summer months we’ve been able to meet up by the East Lake,” said Terri Spartz of the Winona Area Quilters Guild. “Many members have made use of their extra at-home time to quilt and get caught up on their quilting projects.” Spartz said that several of the quilts delivered this summer were part of a fun challenge. “A member was cleaning out her stash and came upon a box that had bundles of the same three coordinating fabrics in equal sizes called ‘fat quarters,’ which are equal to a quarter of a yard,” she explained. “We were challenged to grab a bundle of the three fabrics and then add our own fabric to create a baby quilt. No two quilts are the same. In some cases, those fabrics stand out and in others they blend in more and serve as background fabrics.” Parents of newborns will enjoy having a quilt that was made by caring and generous community members. All gifts to Winona Health are made through the Winona Health Foundation.
