Our first shipment of the Pfizer vaccine arrived at Winona Health on December 17, and, after undergoing specific training related to the vaccine, we began administering it to prioritized staff on December 18! Dr. Joseph Kaiya, one of our hospitalists, was the first person to receive the COVID-19 vaccine at Winona Health. We’re following CDC and MDH guidelines for prioritizing who receives the vaccine (getting the vaccine is not mandatory for anyone), and we’re looking forward to the day when everyone who wants the vaccine can get the vaccine! In the meantime, let’s all continue to do what we can (masking, distancing, handwashing) to prevent the spread of the virus. Although there is a long way to go before we can consider the pandemic over, the initial rollout of the vaccine is a giant, hope-filled step in the right direction.
