A salute to World War II veteran, LeRoy Woychik, on his 100th birthday

January 31, 2022

WWII veteran LeRoy Woychik was in the 11th Armored Division of the Army, serving under General Patton. His division was involved in liberating Mauthausen and Gusen Concentration Camps. When LeRoy turned 100 on January 12, 2022, fellow veterans turned up to surprise him in his home at Winona Health’s Roger Metz Manor. Winona American Legion Post 9 veterans and Arcadia American Legion Post 17, including LeRoy’s brother, Albert Woychik, Jr., came to celebrate and salute their fellow veteran. They awarded him with the Minnesota honorary Legion member Post 9, a properly folded United States flag, Proud Veteran wall plaque and certificate of appreciation. Overwhelmed with gratitude, LeRoy stood, saluted and thanked them. LeRoy’s family, including daughter Nancy Slaby, is grateful to Therapeutic Recreation specialist Nicki Nonn for making arrangement to surprise them all with this moment to honor LeRoy and his service on his 100th birthday. LeRoy and his wife, Faith, who has since passed away, called Winona Health home for eight years. They lived at Watkins Assisted Living for five years and Roger Metz Manor for three. Nancy said that her parents were so happy with the care they’ve received from Winona Health staff through the years. “As a family, we want to commend all the staff for the love, care and home-like family atmosphere they provide. There’s been happiness in their hearts and so many smiles – it’s been wonderful to see. What a feeling of security for our family.” Let’s thank LeRoy for his service and wish him another year filled with comfort and moments of joy at Roger Metz Manor. Every moment matters.
