Watch for traffic opening on Tuesday, November 22

November 18, 2022

Mndot Traffic Lights 111822Winter weather has temporarily slowed construction work on the Hwy 43 project in Winona, but the road should be fully open next week, weather permitting. Thank you for your patience! Here is an update on current construction and the work ahead:

  • Hwy 43/Mankato Ave is scheduled to open fully to traffic later in the day on Tuesday, November 22, weather permitting.
  • Please watch out for construction workers next week as they put the final touches on the project for the season. Slow down, be alert.
  • Crews are scheduled to place traffic signs next week.
  • Temporary pavement markings will be placed along the road on Tuesday, November 22, and then traffic will be guided into its regular routes, traveling through the roundabouts in full, not just utilizing half of the roundabouts.
  • The permanent overhead signs for Hwy 43/Mankato Avenue will likely be added the week of December 5.

Remember to view the overhead signs at the Hwy 61/Hwy 43 roundabout that direct you to which lane is best for the direction you want to travel after you exit the roundabout. Vehicles in the roundabout have the right of way. If you are entering the roundabout, you must yield to those vehicles already in it. Pick a gap when it’s safe to enter. What’s left? Next spring, crews will put the final touches on the project. Landscaping work will be done at a time when plants and other vegetation can be assured of good growing conditions with temperatures and moisture. Additionally, crews will be completing work in the median and curbs that wasn’t completed this season. There will likely be some short-term lane closures when that work is being completed. All businesses can be accessed through the work zone. Remember, Winona Health is always accessible via Parks Avenue South off Hwy 61 near the Winona Family Y. Get the latest MnDOT updates here.
