Making time to schedule a well-check appointment that includes cervical cancer screening (Pap smear) is important. Staying up to date with this and other health screenings can improve your peace of mind and your odds of catching something before it becomes difficult to treat. If you’re 21 or older and haven’t yet been screened for cervical cancer, now is the time. If your result is normal, your healthcare provider may tell you that you can wait three years until your next Pap smear. If you’re between the ages of 30 and 65, your healthcare provider will talk with you about testing options:
- A Pap smear only. If your result is normal, your healthcare provider may tell you that you can wait three years until your next Pap smear.
- An HPV test along with the Pap smear. Also called co-testing. If both results are normal, your healthcare provider may tell you that you can wait five years until your next screening.
If you’re 65 or older, your healthcare provider may tell you that you don’t need to be screened anymore if:
- Your screening test results have been normal for several years, or
- You have had your cervix removed as part of a total hysterectomy for non-cancerous conditions.
