Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC) and Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor (LADC) Todd Connaughty (pronounced CAHN-itty) has joined the caregivers in Winona Health Psychiatric and Counseling Services and will provide mental health therapy for people ages 13 and older. “There are not many individuals or families who haven’t been touched by a mental health concern. People are hurting and they need help,” said Connaughty. “I chose this as my career because I understand that struggle. I want to help others avoid having to go through some of the things my family had to go through. Being able to help and provide a safe space for people to do the work toward healing gives me a sense of purpose and meaning.” Connaughty earned his Master of Arts degree in Counseling Psychology at Saint Mary’s University Minneapolis campus and his Bachelor of Science in Addiction Counseling from Metropolitan State University in St. Paul, Minnesota. He also earned a diploma in Practical Nursing from Minnesota State College Southeast in Winona. “I have unconditional regard for people – without judgement. I believe that individuals are experts on their own lives. I’m here to help them get a new perspective, determine and set goals for themselves and provide support in achieving those goals. I want people to create a life that they love – whatever that is for them.” Connaughty’s expertise incudes diagnostic assessment, development of treatment plans, program development, and individual and group therapy. He is also trained in EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing) therapy. His experience includes extensive work with individuals who are LGBTQ+, those diagnosed with HIV/AIDS, people who have experienced trauma and those who have challenges with substance use. “I grew up in Winona and wanted to return to be closer to family. When I interviewed at Winona Health, I found people to be warm, welcoming and open,” said Connaughty. “I feel like the organization’s mission and philosophy align with my goals and values, and I’m looking forward to working with this team and having a positive impact on the community.”
