Hip replacement made it possible to get back to what I enjoy

John Keane Golf 052024 Web“I have always been a very active person. I bike, swim, golf and Nordic ski. In my younger years, I did a lot of outdoor running, which I believe contributed to issues with my legs in recent years. I had procedures to repair torn meniscus and cartilage in both knees in my early 50s. I had my left hip replaced at Winona Health in 2016 – I was 58. After all of this leg repair, I was able to do events including Trinona, Birkebeiner, Mora Vasaloppet and Ride the Ridges with my children.

“Last year when I was having issues with my right hip, my WH primary care provider, Denver Brown, sent me to see Dr. Norgard at Winona Health Orthopedics. I was pleased that Dr. Norgard listened to me and spent a lot of time talking with me and reviewing my case. I was also impressed with his vast experience. Finally, I was happy that Winona Health agreed to do the procedure outpatient – I did not want to spend a night in the hospital.

“The procedure was done March 4 and all went well. Two days later, I started physical therapy at WH and stayed with it for six weeks (twice a week for 4 weeks / once a week for 2 weeks). I was very happy with my Physical Therapist, Valerie Mullen. Since WH PT is located in the YMCA building and I am a regular at the Y, it was convenient to use the Y Fitness Area after PT.

“I could not walk without pain before my hip replacement. I am happy to be rehabbing and working to get back to my activities. My short-term goal is to do Trinona with my daughter and son-in-law in June. I will try the new Trinona Aquabike Event (swim and bike).

“I am thankful that we have the amazing capability to do hip replacements and I am happy that I did mine at Winona Health with Dr. Norgard.”
