Kashubian Cultural Institute & Polish Museum
October 31, 2024
Commonly known in Winona as The Polish Museum, The Kashubian Cultural Institute & Polish Museum is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.
Located at the corner of 3rd and Liberty streets, they are housed in the Laird-Norton Lumber Company’s original office building.
Transformed into a museum in 1979, they own a collection of Winona’s original immigrant stories, artifacts, and folk art. The Polish Museum also exhibits contemporary Polish art and artifacts from the Communist rule/Solidarity era of Poland. They have a genealogy research area as well as many Winona Polish and Kashubian family histories. The majority of Winona’s immigrants were from the Kashubia region of Poland. The Polish Museum specializes in the history and culture of this region making them the only Kashubian Museum in the United States.
The Kashubian Cultural Institute & Polish Museum also offers a cultural exchange program to Poland for high school youth and adults every year.
You do not have to be Polish to volunteer at The Polish Museum; just an interest in people, history, art, and Winona’s early settlers.
Volunteer: The Kashubian Cultural Institute & Polish Museum is looking for volunteers to man and maintain their gift shop, greet and guide visitors through exhibits, help with their newsletter, do light housekeeping and hosting at events. Flowerbed tending in the spring through summer months is also needed. Volunteer hours can be consistent as once or more a week, or quarterly for newsletter assembly and events.
For more information about volunteering, please contact the Museum Director at 507-454-3431.
