Does the selection in the lotion aisle leave you feeling overwhelmed?
There are so many options, and the range of prices can make you feel like you have to spend a lot to get something that will work. Understanding your options will help you choose products that give you lasting relief when you smooth them into your dry, itchy or cracked skin.
Lotions, creams and ointments – what’s the difference?
Lotion is the common, catch-all term for moisturizing products applied to the skin. The purpose of a moisturizer is to keep skin protected and comfortable and ward off dryness that can lead to itchy or cracked skin. Think if it as invisible armor strengthening your skin’s protective barrier.
Products labeled lotion contain more water, so they are not as thick as creams and ointments. They work well as an all-over moisturizer after you get out of the shower or bath when your skin is still slightly damp. To help prevent dry chapped hands, apply lotion after washing your hands whenever possible.
If you have severely dry skin, look for heavier/thicker products, such as creams and ointments. They will provide more of a barrier to protect your skin and hold in moisture to combat dryness. Ointments are even thicker than creams and are typically the most effective at sealing in moisture to help heal or relieve severely dry, even cracked skin.
Winona Health Dermatologist Chad Weaver, MD, shares this tip: Choose products with ceramides to strengthen, which help improve and protect skin cell health while locking in moisture.
Although you may enjoy a particular scent, scented products can be irritating to the skin – and some peoples’ skin is more sensitive to fragrance. Since there is no physical benefit to using scented products on your skin, for best results, we recommend choosing something that is fragrance free.
The effectiveness of specific products also depends on your skin type.
