Not many football players are as skilled on a sewing machine as they are on the field. Meet Logan Hicks.
Since the 5th grade, Logan, now a 15-year old student athlete at Cotter, has been making colorful, comfortable pillowcases for people receiving hospice care along with blankets and children’s surgical caps and arm board covers for the Surgery Center at Winona Health.
Logan had to undergo some surgical procedures when he was a child, so he is familiar with the experience. Now he gives back by generously using his skills to give children and adults a little extra care, comfort and cheer during a time they may be feeling anxious.
“Being able to make things for other people in need humbles me,” he said. “Also, I know that there is someone on the other side with a great big smile wearing one of my hats or blankets.”
Logan said one of the reasons he enjoys sewing, a skill he learned from his mom, is because it allows him to do something to benefit others in the community. He noted that the diversity of items he’s making also keeps it interesting and challenging.
Last fall, Logan was injured during football season. Sewing was one of the ways he occupied his time while recovering. In February, he delivered a big batch of new items that have delighted the caregivers in the Surgery Center and is sure to bring smiles to many patients and families.
Now fully recovered after receiving care from Orthopedic Specialist Andrew Millis at Winona Health, Logan is happy to be back in the weight room preparing for track season with his teammates at Cotter.
In addition to using his sewing skills in service to others, Logan enjoys fishing with his friends, playing football, and working out. He loves math and hopes to be an engineer in the future.
We recognize the caregiver in Logan, and we’re grateful to have him in our community! We Are Winona.
