Andrea Schwinghammer, a certified physician assistant, joined the Winona Health staff and cares for patients as a physician assistant hospitalist. Hospitalists specialize in caring for hospitalized patients, providing around-the-clock care and working closely with nursing staff and each patient’s primary physician. Hospitalists work with care coordination teams, which include nurses, dietitians, pharmacists, respiratory and physical therapists, social workers and other specialty care staff.
Andrea is passionate about caring for members of her own community on their most difficult days. As the oldest daughter in a big family, Andrea has always been a caregiver and felt born to take care of people. “Medicine offers me a tangible way to live out this calling and apply technical skills to help those in need,” said Schwinghammer.
Andrea’s military background helped shape her passion as she enjoys mentoring young healthcare professionals and helping members of the care team become confident, engaged, and empowered. “I love mentoring people—helping other members of the team be more confident. We’re all members of a team,” noted Schwinghammer.
Andrea worked at a large hospital system after leaving the military, but felt something was missing. She chose Winona Health for its personal, community-focused care and as a place to build a home for her family.
Andrea strives to make patients feel seen, heard, and involved in their care. She encourages active participation and takes time for patient education and meaningful conversations.
Schwinghammer earned her Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies at the University of Wisconsin in La Crosse, and her Bachelor of Science in Biology from Bemidji State University in Bemidji, Minnesota. She is certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants and is a member of the American Academy of Physician Assistants, Society of Army Physician Assistants, and the Minnesota Academy of Physician Assistants.
In her free time, Andrea enjoys gardening, caring for houseplants and cooking meals using the produce she grows. Andrea and her partner recently welcomed their first child, a four-month-old son, who’s inspired her to become even more invested in her local community.
