Beginning in fall 2026, Winona Health will offer a fifth School-Based Health Clinic location serving students at Cotter Schools. Winona Health School-Based Health Clinics provide students with convenient, high-quality healthcare right at school, with current locations at Jefferson Elementary School, Winona Senior High School, Winona Middle School, and Winona Area Learning Center. These school-based clinics can be used just as you would use a clinic visit at Winona Health.
“School-Based Health Clinics (SBHCs) complement existing school health services by providing access to primary care and behavioral health through school and community partnerships,” stated Madeline Speltz, Quality Coordinator RN for the school-based clinics. “School-based health care means that students can receive vaccines, have an annual physical, and speak openly about their mental health in a safe, known-to-them, nurturing space while decreasing their out-of-seat time. SBHCs also decrease outside barriers that families too often face, including but not limited to transportation, cost of medical care, and parent/guardian work schedules,” added Speltz.
Schools that have SBHCs report increased attendance, decreased disciplinary referrals, lower dropout rates and higher graduation rates, and overall improved school climate.
Winona Health School-based Health Clinics will provide the following care:
- Physicals; routine physicals and health screenings, sports physicals
- Well-child exams
- Immunizations including: Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), measles, mumps, rubella (MMR), polio, Tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis (Tdap), Hepatitis B, Meningitis, and others
- Treatment of minor illness and injury; this includes flu and cold symptoms, infections, earaches, rashes, menstrual problems, sexually transmitted infection (STI) testing and treatment
- Medication follow-up
- Mental health support including early intervention, treatment and counseling for common issues like depression, anxiety, stress, family and relationship issues, academic issues, and planning for the future
Appointments will be billed to insurance and health information will be added to the student’s electronic medical record just as it would if the student were seeing a primary care provider at Winona Health. Due to current grant funding, for a limited time uncompensated care as a result of a lack of insurance or coverage will be free for patients.
