Winona Health’s business office and cashier staff have developed a new free service to help patients who have questions regarding insurance coverage, insurance benefits and questions related to healthcare costs.
“We understand that healthcare costs are complicated and, unlike most other products and services, they may vary by factors as unique as each individual and their insurance coverage,” said Rachelle Schultz, Winona Health president/CEO. “We’re here to serve our community, and we want to do what we can to help patients overcome those financial concerns.”
Examples of the kind of assistance the new service has provided to community members so far include:
- Helping a Medicare-aged couple understanding their options for adding drug coverage insurance.
- Helping a community member who lost his job understand COBRA.
- Helping a person who was having issues after switching her insurance plan coordinate coverage.
“People are dealing with so many things, especially when they are worried about health issues and medical bills,” said Audrey Pronschinske, Winona Health director of revenue cycle. “We opened the Patient Resource Center to help alleviate that worry. This may mean helping people navigate their insurance coverage and options or connecting them with other community resources.”
The Patient Resource Center is another way Winona Health demonstrates its commitment to providing community-focused care. It will be an additional resource for people who want help in understanding how to navigate the insurance and payment side of healthcare.
“The average person is not fully familiar with the language of healthcare insurance,” said Jan Brosnahan, Winona Health CFO. “Terms such as deductibles, copayments, co-insurance, medically necessary, preventive, and diagnostic are confusing to them. Understanding these terms and how that impacts the portion of healthcare services that their insurance covers vs. what they are responsible to personally pay is important for them to understand. Winona Health has professionals who are intimately familiar with how this all works and who are available to help our patients work through these details with their insurance plans. We are here to help!”
Winona Health’s Patient Resource Center is open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday, and is located near the Outpatient Laboratory on the clinic first floor at 855 Mankato Avenue in Winona. Patients will be served on a walk-in basis and the services are provided free to Winona area community members.
