To protect patients and others from potential exposure to COVID-19, Winona Health is encouraging the use of telemedicine visits as an alternative to leaving home and coming to the clinic for healthcare appointments. Telemedicine is a face-to-face visit with your healthcare provider through the use of technology. All that’s needed is a reliable internet connection and a smartphone, tablet or computer with a web camera, microphone, and speakers. No programs or apps will need to be downloaded. “All of us at Winona Health want to continue to provide the best care possible to our community during these difficult times with COVID-19,” said Adam Fletcher, MD. “Telemedicine is proving to be a very effective way for people to receive this care in the safety of their own home.” Telemedicine can be used for a variety of appointments such as management of chronic conditions, nutrition education, management of mental health concerns, and follow up visits for several types of procedures. Telemedicine is for visits that don’t require hands-on care. You will likely be able to see your usual provider through telemedicine. Telemedicine visits and in person clinic visits are billed to insurance in a similar way. Normal co-pays, co-insurances, and deductibles apply as are specific to a patient’s plan. In addition to preventing unnecessary exposure to the coronavirus, telemedicine visits are more convenient for patients by saving the time of traveling to and from the clinic. Those who are interested in using telemedicine are encouraged to call their provider’s office to see if this is an option for them: 507-457-7648. More information about telemedicine is also available at winonahealth.org/telemedicine.
