Harvey, a red-tailed hawk; Cyrus, an American kestrel; and Lia, a burrowing owl, received a warm welcome from Lake Winona Manor residents on Tuesday. Residents and caregivers enjoyed an up-close look as they learned about these raptors and what makes them unique. Abbey, from River Valley Raptors, shared that the red-tailed hawk has such high-definition vision they can see the whiskers on a mouse from a football field away. Owls have unique ear placement and keen hearing that allows them to hear a mouse under two feet of snow, and the American kestrel can fly at speeds up to 200 miles an hour and catches its prey in the air! Michelle Rhoades, a caregiver in our Therapeutic Recreation Department, planned the program and was excited that so many residents were interested in seeing and learning about these birds. “It was wonderful to see so many residents enjoying the program – even some who normally choose to stay in their rooms were excited to come down to see the birds.” Resident Ellen Schlesser said, “I remember watching the birds around the farm when I was growing up. I wish there had been a program like this back when I was in school. I’m so glad I got to see this –it’s good to learn new things at any age!” Ellen shared that she is 92! Our Lake Winona Manor caregivers plan programs like this to enrich the lives of our residents and help them stay connected and engaged. Thanks for joining us!
