After beginning her career in the pharmacy, Keri soon transitioned to the business office. We all embrace the role of caregiver, and at the heart of Keri’s work is being an advocate for our patients and helping them navigate insurance questions and issues. “I like what I do. Knowing that my work helps our patients and is also appreciated by my coworkers is what keeps me going,” she said. She mentioned that people in the community often approach her with questions about their bills and insurance. “I guess I’ve helped so many people over the phone through the years that word has gotten out!” she laughed.
Reflecting on the biggest changes through her career so far, she’d have to say that technology and the organization’s growth have had the biggest impact. She remembers that the move to computers and the implementation of electronic medical records was challenging. “My typewriter was like my baby,” she laughed. “I didn’t want to give it up.” As is her way, Keri adapted to the change quickly and came to appreciate new technology for its efficiency.
Thinking of the changes in her personal life, Keri says, “When I started, I had a two-year-old daughter and was expecting my second baby; I’ve raised three kids during my career here. I’ve appreciated that my job made it possible for me to be able to do that, and that I have understanding and accommodating coworkers.”
In celebrating 50 years with Winona Health, Keri said, “I’m very grateful for my job, and I have a great boss!” When asked if she was just saying that because her boss was within ear shot, Keri and her “boss,” director, Audrey Ceplecha, both laughed. You can tell they have a relationship built on trust and respect that’s grown stronger through the years. Audrey, who is celebrating a service milestone of 30 years at Winona Health, laughed and noted, “Keri is the one who trained me!”
Happy Winona Health anniversary to these outstanding coworkers and to the other 109 caregivers being recognized for service milestones from 5 to 50 years.
