The onset of sweater weather may also signal the start of dry-itchy-skin weather.
The change of seasons means it’s time to switch up your skin-care routine. The dryer air of winter can lead to dry, itchy skin – or worse, flaky, cracked and painful patches.
Dermatologist Chad Weaver, MD, says the best time to prevent and soothe dry skin is before the itchiness sets in. Here are tips to take care of your skin so you can embrace the cozy!
The first rule of winter skin care: Keep your skin hydrated:
- Use warm – not hot – water when you shower or bathe. Close the bathroom door to hold in the humidity.
- Keep showers and baths short – about 5-10 minutes.
- Use a gentle, fragrance-free soap – and apply lightly.
- Pat your skin dry with a soft towel.
- Apply a moisturizing lotion right after drying off and allow to soak in. This will help trap in the moisture and protect your skin. Use a moisturizing lotion after every shower, bath and hand washing. Some people react to fragrances, so choosing a fragrance-free lotion may be your best option. Problem areas may require a thicker crème or ointment.
Look for creams or ointments containing one of more of these ingredients:
- Dimethicone
- Glycerin
- Hyaluronic acid
- Lactic acid
- Lanolin
- Mineral oil
- Petrolatum
- Shea butter
Avoid products that contain:
- Alcohol
- Fragrance

Here are a few more tips to keep your skin soft and itch-free:
Keep hand lotion – handy! We should all wash our hands frequently to prevent the spread of germs, but that can also lead to dry, chapped hands. So, keep a non-greasy hand lotion with you to use after washing your hands.
Protect your lips with lip balm or petroleum jelly like Vaseline. It doesn’t have to be expensive to be effective.
Use a humidifier – there are portable humidifiers, and some home heating systems include a humidifier – if your does, make sure it’s working.
Chose clothing that doesn’t irritate your skin. Wear cotton or silk under your wool sweaters or other garments. It may also be helpful to choose fragrance-free or “hypoallergenic” laundry detergent.
