U of M medical student learning at Winona Health earns Student Achievement Award

July 2, 2024

Nyika Friberg, a third-year medical student at the University of Minnesota received the University’s Rural Physician Associate Program (RPAP) Student Achievement Award.

‌Friberg was nominated by Winona Health Pediatrician Sarah Lallaman, and Family Medicine Physician Nicholas Modjeski, both of whom were preceptors for Friberg.

‌“Nyika has been an outstanding student throughout all his clinical experiences no matter which department he was in,” noted Dr. Lallaman. “He excelled above all expectations.”

‌Dr. Lallaman added that beyond that, what stands out is Friberg’s ability to connect with people and show compassion to others. During his time learning at Winona Health, he had the unique opportunity to live at Senior Living at Watkins, an assisted living residence. Seeing yet another way he could be helpful, Friberg even got certified as a driver so he would be able to take residents on outings.

‌“I can’t count the number of ways Nyika extends himself to help others,” said Dr. Lallaman. “He had a unique upbringing in Tanzania, where intergenerational living is culturally normal. That has given him a valuable perspective in his interactions with residents and our patients. His ability to foster relationships with people of all ages and cultures enhances his effectiveness as a caregiver.”

‌After receiving the award, Friberg said in a message to Dr. Modjeski and Lallaman, “This nomination and award means so much to me. I appreciate the environment at Winona Health that fosters learning, curiosity and community. The effect Winona and my preceptors there have had on me can’t be overstated. The nuances and nuggets of wisdom I’ve picked up will stay with me for a lifetime.”

‌The Rural Physician Associate Program (RPAP) is a nine-month, community-based educational experience for University of Minnesota third-year medical students who live and train in rural communities across Minnesota and western Wisconsin. RPAP students experience hands-on learning as they care for patients of all ages.

‌Winona Health, now in its 130th year, provides learning opportunities for future healthcare providers and continues to find new ways to build, support and improve the healthcare workforce needed to care for our community today and for generations to come.
