Winona Health General Surgeon Matthew Broghammer receives Karl Shurson Quality Award

Winona Health General Surgeon Matthew Broghammer received a Karl Shurson Quality Award at the Performance Excellence Network – Southeast Minnesota (PEN-SE MN) annual Karl Shurson Quality Awards presentation Tuesday, January 15, 2019. Among the reasons Dr. Broghammer was selected for this quality award: • Dr. Broghammer is first and foremost a patient advocate. As Winona Health’s Chief of Surgical and Specialty Care for nine years, he focused on opportunities for improvement to consistently deliver exceptional care. • As a member of Winona Health’s Board of Directors he provides a rich, clinical perspective to Board discussions. • For the past 12 years, he has been the Chair of Winona Health’s Quality and Safety Board Committee and solicits feedback from the Committee’s community members. • Dr. Broghammer facilitates the Quality and Safety Board Committee’s review of not only clinical quality and safety, but also of support services like Human Resources, Information Technology, Security and Facilities. These groups routinely present their performance improvement initiatives. • As vice-president of the Winona Health Medical Staff, a new role for him in 2018, Dr. Broghammer continues to focus on evidence-based clinical pathways and guidelines to improve patient outcomes, mitigate risk, and remove waste. “Dr. Broghammer is able to look across the full organization to see how systems work and see the complexity of what is needed to gain sustained results,” said Winona Health President/CEO, Rachelle Schultz, EdD. “He is persistent and unwavering in his desire for improvement.” In accepting his award, Dr. Broghammer credited staff engagement and colleague support as key aspects of ongoing improvement. In addition, Winona Health Continuous Systems Improvement Director Roderick Baker was a Shurson Award Recognition Recipient. The Karl Shurson Committee recognized Baker for his leadership in continuous systems improvement and for his dedication to Winona Health and his colleagues in the pursuit of continuous improvement. The Karl Shurson Quality Award was named for a long-time IBM Rochester executive who played a key role in the facility’s team that won the Malcolm Baldrige Quality Award in 1990. Shortly afterwards, Karl Shurson leveraged his Baldrige experience and helped found the Rochester Area Quality Council (now PEN-SE MN). Winona Health, one of the nation’s Top 100 Rural & Community Hospitals, is celebrating 125 years in 2019.
