In 2019, Winona Health is celebrating 125 years of community-focused care. In honor of the date the organization was established, February 28, 1894, Winona Mayor Mark Peterson proclaimed Thursday, February 28, 2019, Winona Health Day! Winona Health is a community asset, and the Winona Community has played an important role in its history. Since 1894, community members have generously supported Winona’s independent, community-owned healthcare organization. To help celebrate 125 years of care, community members, patients and volunteers are invited to share a Winona Health (or Community Memorial Hospital or Winona General Hospital) memory or story. Touching or funny, recent or long ago, memories may be about an experience or about a doctor, nurse or staff member. Those who submit stories or memories by midnight Thursday, February 28, have the option of being entered for prize drawings including massage gift certificates, spa gift certificates, Winona Health Lakeside Café gift cards or an engraved paver in the Robinson Healing Garden. Submit a memory or story with name and contact information to: info@winonahealth.org and “Winona Health memory” in the subject line. Memories also can be mailed to Community Engagement, Winona Health, 855 Mankato Ave., Winona, MN 55987. In proclaiming February 28, 2019, Winona Health Day, Mayor Peterson noted the following:

  • 125 years ago local physicians and concerned citizens met on February 24, 1894, to discuss the need for a hospital.
  • They agreed there was a pressing need and, although the challenge of starting a hospital was daunting, on February 28, 1894, the Winona General Hospital Association was established.
  • Over the next 125 years, the organization’s name and location would change; the ongoing generosity and commitment of community members helped shape what is now Winona Health and demonstrated that it is a community asset worth supporting.
  • Winona Health is deeply rooted in this community and continuously and proactively evolves to meet the community’s healthcare needs.
  • For 125 years Winona Health’s mission to improve the health and well-being of the greater Winona community has remained steadfast.
  • Winona would not be the same without this innovative and independent, community-owned healthcare organization.
