A heartfelt message

Sprain Lynn 0821 Rgb 240X288 1When it comes to our health, we cannot control everything, but, take heart, we can control some things. As someone who specializes in cardiac rehabilitation, I have a special interest in heart health. Heart disease is sneaky. Some people don’t know their health is at serious risk until they have a wake-up call in the form of what’s known as a heart attack. So, it’s vital to know your risk factors and how to prevent heart disease. The best way to do that? Regular checkups with your primary care provider. Your primary care provider is your “go-to” person for helping you stay healthy (preventive maintenance for your body) and for help with any health concerns you have through every stage of life. They provide solutions, helpful advice and connect you with specialty care and other resources when needed. Back to your heart. Your primary care provider assesses risk for heart disease by monitoring your blood pressure, cholesterol, body weight, blood sugar and asking about your activity level. They’ll recommend ways to decrease your risk, which may include some adjustments to what you eat, tips for dealing with stress, and ways to be more active. In Cardiac Rehab, we work on making the heart stronger. Your heart is a muscle, and it can get stronger with exercise. Exercise also can help lower your blood pressure, reduce LDL “bad” cholesterol and burn more calories to help with weight loss. Even brisk walking for 30 minutes on most days of the week can benefit your heart and lower your risk for heart disease. Other activities like biking, swimming and exercise to improve strength and flexibility are also beneficial. The key is sticking with it, so best to find what you enjoy – and if you can find people (or a pet!) you enjoy spending time with to join you, even better! If you have any concerns about starting an exercise program, it’s important to talk to your primary care provider – it’s one of the many things they are there for. Winona Health’s Cardiopulmonary Rehab Programs are available to people who have had a recent heart-related emergency, as well as those at higher risk for heart disease. If you’re due for a health checkup take a moment and get it scheduled. If you’ve been putting this off because you don’t currently have a primary care provider, visit winonahealth.org/primarycare and learn about our local providers. The year is still young! I hope you’ll take this heartfelt message to heart and make this the year you prioritize your health. Friday, February 2 is Go Red day! Please wear red Friday to raise awareness about heart health. Encourage your friends and family to join you in taking steps to improve their heart health. Learn more here.
