There’s a lot of focus on health goals at the start of a new year, but the truth is there’s never a wrong time to check in on your health. One of the most important steps you can take for your long-term well-being is scheduling your annual checkup — even if you feel perfectly healthy.
These visits give us the chance to look at your overall health and screen for conditions that may not have symptoms yet. They also help build a relationship between you and your primary care provider. That relationship can make a big difference when health concerns do arise because you already have someone who knows you and your health history which helps us provide more personalized care.
Important screenings for staying well Routine screenings are a key part of preventive care. Depending on your age, health history and risk factors, recommended screenings may include:
- Blood tests to check for diabetes and high cholesterol
- Blood pressure monitoring
- STI screenings
- Cancer screenings such as colonoscopies, mammograms, Pap smears or lung CT scans for those with a history of smoking
One important update many people may not be aware of is that colon cancer screenings now typically begin at age 45 instead of 50. Earlier screening helps detect colon cancer sooner, when it is often more treatable.
Staying on top of ongoing health concerns For those living with chronic conditions such as diabetes or high blood pressure, regular follow-up and communication with your primary care provider are essential. Following care recommendations and reaching out if something isn’t clear can make a significant difference in managing your health.
You’re also not alone in this process. At Winona Health, our care team includes nurses, pharmacists, dietitians and diabetes educators who are here to support you along the way and help you succeed.
Small choices that add up over time Supporting your health doesn’t have to involve dramatic changes. Small, consistent choices can lead to meaningful improvements over time. Simple steps you can start today include:
- Choosing fruits and vegetables instead of processed snacks
- Taking the stairs or adding short walks into your day
- Drinking more water
- Giving your body enough rest by getting around eight hours of sleep nightly
When health goals feel overwhelming It’s normal to feel overwhelmed when thinking about lifestyle changes. As healthcare providers, we don’t expect patients to achieve their goals overnight. Instead, we encourage breaking larger goals into smaller, manageable steps. Simple and sustainable changes are often the ones people can maintain.
Many health concerns develop gradually and without symptoms, which is why checking in regularly is so important. Having providers who know your health history and understand your goals helps ensure you receive care that fits your needs. Regular visits give us the chance to monitor changes, answer questions and help you stay as healthy as possible.
